The claims, answered
- Is Go Church a sect, as the VRT documentary Undercover bij Go Church suggests?
- Does the money given at Go Church go to Bishop Dag Heward-Mills?
- Does Go Church target children and minors, as the VRT documentary claims?
- Does Go Church cut young people off from their friends and family?
- Does Go Church tell members to stop therapy or medicine?
- Do Go Church members treat Bishop Dag Heward-Mills like a god?
- How did Go Church handle the abuse case in VRT’s documentary, and what does Bishop Dag Heward-Mills teach about abuse?
- Did Go Church respond to the VRT documentary’s questions before it aired?
The witnesses
- Lawrence OdonkorSuing the church since 2021. Convicted in Madagascar of breach of trust and embezzlement of church property; two appeals dismissed.
- Emmanuel Oko MensahSuing the church since 2021. Ghana’s state pension fund, SSNIT, shows his contributions paid from 2003 to 2018.
- Manasseh Azure AwuniBeing sued by the church over these stories. Found in contempt in that case and ordered to apologise to Bishop Dag.
- MorelThe one line tying Bishop Dag to the abuse rests on his belief that “he knows everything”. No date, no message, no source.
- Johan DetrauxOnce president of a Flemish study and advice group on sects, and a substitute member of the state’s sect-watch centre. VRT disclosed neither.
- Wim VandewieleOn air he spoke only of “traces” of a harmful movement, and said such groups “are certainly not banned”.
The record VRT left out
The six former pastors behind the film’s Ghana accusations asked the church for twelve million dollars to settle, the church’s lawyer told a court in Accra in August 2021. Their own lawyer denied there was a demand; his letter of December 2022 put a figure on each man. Ghana’s pension regulator, SSNIT, backed the church. VRT told its viewers none of this.
Go Church is a Belgian church, led by its own pastors. It looks to Bishop Dag Heward-Mills as a spiritual father: it reads his books and uses his teaching.
See For Yourself was made by members and supporters of the church around the world. No one asked us to make it, and no church paid for it.
